Heritage Housing Partners (HHP) has partnered with First Place for Youth, Pasadena City College (PCC), and the Pasadena Community Foundation (PCF) to create innovative housing solutions for transitional-age youth in Pasadena, California. The collaboration involved transforming two existing structures into six studio apartment units, specifically designed for young adults exiting the foster care system.
This project provides housing for six participants in First Place for Youth’s extended foster care program, aged 18 to 24, who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. The location near PCC offers convenient access for residents pursuing education, with the college providing rent subsidies.
Addressing a Critical Need for Stable Housing
This partnership addresses the alarming rise in student homelessness, particularly amongst community college students. According to a UCLA study, one in five California Community College students face housing insecurity. Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo emphasized the high concentration of foster youth in the area and the need to prioritize affordable housing for this vulnerable population.
Charles Loveman, executive director of HHP, highlighted the transformative impact of providing these young people with a safe and stable living environment. Having a key and a secure space can significantly improve their well-being and future prospects.
A Collaborative Solution for Long-Term Success
The collaboration between First Place for Youth, HHP, and PCC exemplifies the power of community-driven solutions. Thomas G. Lee, CEO of First Place for Youth, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in combating youth homelessness and fostering long-term independence. By providing stable housing and support services, the initiative aims to equip young adults with the tools they need to thrive.
The project signifies a crucial step towards addressing youth homelessness and promoting educational opportunities for vulnerable young adults in Pasadena. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on August 7th to celebrate the completion of this vital housing project.
