Prior to his role at Alvarez & Marsal Capital Partners, Mr. McCarthy co-founded and served as Senior Portfolio Manager at Highview Capital, a $500 million middle market fund based in Los Angeles. During his tenure, he spearheaded all critical investment functions, from strategy formulation and investment criteria development to team building, sourcing, investment committee processes, deal execution, board formation, and the implementation of key portfolio initiatives and strategic plans. Highview Capital, under his leadership, adopted a long-term investment approach focusing on companies undergoing significant transformations. His leadership extended to board positions at notable companies such as American Plastics, GS Foods, National Fire & Safety, and Firstlight Media, where he played a key role in strategic direction and oversight.
Earlier in his career, Mr. McCarthy was instrumental in the growth of Aurora Resurgence, the value-oriented private equity arm of Aurora Capital Group. As a Founding Member, Partner, and Investment Committee Member, he spent nine years executing buy-out, corporate carve-out, and turnaround transactions across a broad spectrum of industries in both the U.S. and Europe. His sector experience includes consumer goods, industrials, business services, and transportation and logistics. His board service at Aurora Resurgence included prominent firms such as SIRVA, ALLTUB, International Cookware (Pyrex), Lexington Precision, and Tops Parking, further solidifying his reputation as a seasoned and versatile investment professional.
Notably, Mr. McCarthy’s professional journey began and has significantly circled back to Alvarez & Marsal. He holds the distinction of being the first analyst hired by Alvarez & Marsal in 1999, during the firm’s early stages. Over eight years, he ascended to the position of Senior Director, functioning as a management consultant and taking on interim executive roles, including COO, CFO, and Treasurer, for over ten companies. This deep-rooted history with Alvarez & Marsal underscores his expertise and commitment to the firm’s values and approach, now amplified through his partnership at Alvarez & Marsal Capital Partners.
