He solidified his foundational knowledge with a rigorous 1-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine, completed in 2003. This robust training equipped him to excel in diverse areas of veterinary care. His clinical interests are broad and deep, encompassing internal medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, preventive care, and the specialized needs of senior pets. This wide-ranging expertise allows him to contribute significantly to the comprehensive health of animal companions.
Beyond his clinical skills, Dr. Hurty has cultivated a keen interest in the dynamics of veterinary teams. He is deeply invested in creating and sustaining positive team cultures, recognizing that a supportive and well-functioning team is crucial for delivering exceptional patient care and building successful veterinary partnerships. Dr. Hurty’s dedication extends to serving and strengthening the Oregon veterinary community. As the Medical Director at Grove Veterinary Clinic and the current (2024) President of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA), he is actively involved in shaping the future of veterinary care in the region. He is committed to understanding and addressing the challenges faced by veterinary professionals, striving to improve the sustainability and resilience of the entire profession in Oregon and by extension, the broader western veterinary landscape.
On a personal note, Dr. Hurty is married to Dr. Natasha Knight, and together they are raising two children, Claire and Ben. Their family life is enriched by a diverse collection of pets, including a cat named Rio, and five dogs – Chi Chi Bean, Barry, Bandit, Buddy Cake, and Pol – each with their own unique personality. Adding to the lively household are two chickens, Crazy Taco Lady and Sabrina Duncan. He was a founding member of the Friends of the Lincoln County Animal Shelter (FOLCAS), demonstrating his proactive stance on animal welfare. He has also chaired the Oregon Coast Therapy Animals (OCTA) Board and the Lincoln County Animal Shelter & Wellness Committee. For over a decade before the pandemic, he organized the pet care clinic for the Lincoln County Project Homeless Connect, providing vital services to pets of underserved community members.
