Strong economic and community bonds, deeply rooted cultural connections, and shared geographical borders form the robust foundation of trilateral cooperation between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The interwoven nature of our security and economic success underscores the critical importance of our partnerships. As North American Partners, our nations are committed to collaborative efforts, led by our leaders, to effectively address mutual threats, streamline the lawful flow of people and goods across our borders, and strengthen our economic integration. This deepened economic partnership is aimed at establishing the North American economy as the most competitive and sustainable on the global stage. Our shared dedication to this vision protects the well-being of our populations and fosters a level playing field for businesses, families, and workers throughout North America. Furthermore, the United States, Canada, and Mexico are united in their resolve to dismantle transnational criminal organizations, prevent irregular migration, disrupt drug trafficking networks, and collaboratively address a wide spectrum of regional and global challenges.
The cornerstone of North American cooperation is the annual North American Leaders’ Summit. This high-level forum is supported by consistent ministerial meetings involving key departments such as State, Commerce, Defense, Energy, Justice, Interior, and the Environmental Protection Agency, alongside their counterparts from Canada and Mexico. Complementing these summits are numerous bilateral engagements at the technical level. Through this comprehensive and ongoing dialogue, we, as North American partners, strive to enhance North America’s economic competitiveness, cultivate a unified strategy for tackling regional and global issues, and bolster the security of all our citizens. The tradition of leaders from the United States, Canada, and Mexico convening regularly began in 2005, initiated by President George W. Bush who hosted the inaugural trilateral Summit. Initially known as the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, the leaders’ meeting officially transitioned to the North American Leaders Summit in 2009. Canada proudly hosted the most recent Summit in 2016, and the United States was anticipated to host the subsequent Summit in 2017, further cementing the ongoing commitment of North American partners to regional collaboration.
