Streetwise Partners, established in New York City in 1997, originated from a vision shared by young professionals. Recognizing their privileged access to resources, they aimed to combat economic inequality. These founders possessed career experience, robust professional networks, and a strong desire to share their advantages. They understood they could leverage these assets to support individuals within underserved communities who lacked essential role models and professional connections. With modest initial funding and the use of borrowed meeting spaces, they launched an innovative mentoring program, which marked the inception of StreetWise Partners. By 2006, the organization broadened its reach, extending its operations into the D.C. Metro area.

At the heart of StreetWise Partners is a comprehensive one-year mentoring program. This program is meticulously designed to offer personalized support to adult job seekers, facilitating the development of a broad professional network. This network comprises hundreds of advocates dedicated to opening doors and fostering sustained career advancement. Since its founding, StreetWise Partners has positively impacted the lives of 10,000 adults, thanks to the commitment of 15,000 volunteers.

StreetWise Partners operates on the principle that employment transcends mere financial compensation. A job provides purpose, structure to daily life, community integration, and financial security. However, systemic inequities have historically restricted access to middle-wage jobs for unemployed and underemployed adults in certain communities. Even individuals who achieve academic milestones, such as college graduation or completion of training programs, often remain disadvantaged. Research indicates that a significant majority of job opportunities, approximately 70%, are not publicly advertised, and networking is crucial, accounting for 80% of job placements. Individuals from marginalized communities frequently encounter barriers due to factors like birthplace, appearance, or community affiliation. These barriers typically manifest as: 1) limited access to middle-wage employment opportunities, 2) insufficient access to professional development resources and experiential learning, and 3) a lack of social capital, including essential role models, references, and advocates.
