Maureen Sweeney brings over 25 years of extensive experience in finance, restructuring, and transactional law. Her career spans both in-house roles at PSP Partners and private practice, giving her a unique perspective on the needs of private equity firms and public and private companies. She has navigated a broad spectrum of financing activities, including those related to acquisitions, restructurings, initial public offerings, and other significant corporate transactions across diverse business sectors and international borders.
Carolyn Alford, co-leader of King & Spalding’s Finance and Restructuring practice group, commented on Sweeney’s appointment: “Maureen’s comprehensive experience across private credit, corporate finance, and financial restructuring, combined with her insights from both private practice and her time at PSP Partners, will be invaluable to our clients and our team. Her reputation as a highly skilled, collaborative lawyer and mentor precedes her, and we are confident she will be a significant asset to our practice and our continued growth.”
During her tenure as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at PSP Partners, Sweeney was crucial in shaping legal risk strategy and overseeing the legal aspects of all investments and transactions. She also provided counsel on corporate and organizational governance, risk management, compliance, human resources, and dispute resolution. Prior to her role at PSP Partners, Sweeney spent nearly two decades as a finance partner at Kirkland & Ellis, following a period at Paul Hastings. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School.
Sweeney expressed her enthusiasm about joining King & Spalding, stating, “Having collaborated with and worked alongside many of my new King & Spalding colleagues throughout my career, I am thrilled to join forces to expand the firm’s finance and restructuring practice in Chicago and nationwide. I am passionate about being deeply involved in the practice of law and tackling complex transactions for clients. King & Spalding, with its growing finance and restructuring group and strong emphasis on teamwork, is the ideal platform for me.”
King & Spalding’s Finance and Restructuring practice group is comprised of over 100 lawyers across 11 global offices. The practice serves a prestigious clientele, including all of the top 10 US banks, most major global banks, leading private credit funds managed by prominent global asset managers, top-tier private equity sponsors, and corporate borrowers. This strategic hire follows the recent expansion of the firm’s London office with a 12-lawyer fund finance and ESG team, further demonstrating the firm’s commitment to growth in these critical areas.
