Remembering W. Dean Henry: A Legacy at Legacy Partners Inc.

W. Dean Henry, a respected figure in the multifamily real estate industry and the second CEO of Legacy Partners Inc., passed away on Monday, August 8, 2022, in San Francisco at the age of 76. His sudden departure after a brief illness has left a void in the lives of his extensive family, numerous friends, and the professional community he significantly impacted. Dean Henry’s life was a testament to dedicated leadership, genuine partnership, and a passion for both the built environment and the great outdoors.

Born to Kathryn Electra (Mann) and Loman Walter Henry in Texas, Dean’s journey took him to Cashmere High School in Washington State, where he graduated in 1964. He furthered his education at the University of Puget Sound (UPS), earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1969. His leadership qualities were evident early on, as he served as President of the Student Body at UPS and was an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Beyond academics, Dean excelled in sports, becoming a champion in various intermural competitions.

Dean Henry’s zest for life extended beyond his professional achievements at Legacy Partners Inc. He was an avid golfer, enjoying courses from Sonoma and Palm Springs to Denver and even Scotland. His annual “guys” trip to South America and yearly fishing expeditions to Alaska were cherished traditions, showcasing his love for adventure and camaraderie. He appreciated travel throughout the US, often indulging in fine dining and wine, reflecting his appreciation for quality and the finer things in life.

However, Dean’s true professional passion was deeply rooted in Legacy Partners Inc. Taking the helm as CEO in 2012, succeeding Preston Butcher, Dean embraced his leadership role with remarkable energy and unwavering integrity. During his tenure, Legacy Partners Inc. experienced significant growth, expanding its footprint from the West Coast to the East, reaching more states, employees, business partners, and forging countless friendships along the way. Dean fundamentally believed in the essence of “partnership,” a value that permeated both his professional and personal life. This integration brought him immense joy and benefited those fortunate enough to experience his wisdom, resilience, and distinctive humor. For Dean, the pinnacle of happiness was found in the company of loved ones, often with the added satisfaction of closing a successful deal.

Dean Henry’s career in multifamily real estate began in 1969 and continued uninterrupted until his passing. His expertise was widely recognized within the industry. He contributed his insights and experience by serving on the Executive Committee of the National Multifamily Housing Council and as a member of the Policy Advisory Board of the Center for Real Estate at the University of California at Berkeley. Further demonstrating his commitment to the sector, Dean chaired the Multifamily Leadership Board of the National Association of Home Builders and was an active member of the Urban Land Institute. His dedication extended to affordable housing as a former board member of Mercy Housing, a non-profit organization instrumental in developing, preserving, and financing thousands of affordable homes across the United States.

Community engagement and philanthropy were also integral to Dean’s life. He served as a former Chairman of the YMCA of San Francisco and remained a dedicated board member since 2003. Beyond the YMCA, Dean actively supported numerous charities, including D’Vine Path and the Cystinosis Research Foundation, reflecting his compassionate nature and desire to give back.

Dean Henry is survived by his wife Nelda, daughters Stephanie (Anthony) Henry, and Katie (Tony) Flowers, stepsons Shane (Rose) Arnold and Bryce Arnold, grandchildren Cameron and Anthony, step-grandchild Zach, brother Mike Henry, brother in-law Larry Cole, and nephews Kurt (Heidi) Cole, Craig (Teresa) Cole, Jesse (Mackenzie) Henry, and Donnie Henry, along with numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Loma Kay Cole, sister-in-law Lin Henry, and several aunts and uncles. Dean Henry’s legacy at Legacy Partners Inc. and beyond will be remembered for his leadership, partnership, and the profound impact he had on those around him.
