The History of Health Partners Inc.: A Legacy of Care
The story of Health Partners Inc. began in 1992 with Sisters Michaeleen and Gladys Marie of the Sisters of Holy Cross. Recognizing a critical need within Charles County, they founded Health Partners to provide healthcare access to residents who lacked insurance and the financial means to afford medical services.
Initially, Health Partners Inc. relied on the generosity of local doctors who volunteered their time to see patients pro bono in their private practices. As the need grew, so did the vision for Health Partners Inc. In 1996, a significant step forward was taken when the County Commissioners granted permission for Health Partners to renovate space at the Old Waldorf School. This marked the establishment of a dedicated medical clinic, operating as an independent non-profit organization guided by a volunteer Board of Directors.
Health Partners Inc. expanded its services in 2007 with the addition of a dental clinic. This crucial expansion was made possible through funding from The Greater Waldorf Jaycees, further solidifying Health Partners Inc.’s commitment to comprehensive community healthcare. Today, Health Partners Inc. operates a thriving Primary Care Medical Clinic staffed by a full-time Nurse Practitioner and a Dental Clinic supported by three dedicated Dentists and a Dental Hygienist.
The landscape of healthcare access evolved significantly with the introduction of the Affordable Care Act. Health Partners Inc. proactively adapted to these changes, expanding its programs to address the increasing need for accessible care within the growing Medicaid population. In a pivotal moment on January 31, 2014, Health Partners Inc. received a $300,000 grant from the Maryland Community Health Resource Commission. This grant, specifically for “Expansion of services and transition to include a Fee for Services” for Medicaid-qualified clients, was instrumental in helping Health Partners Inc. advance towards its long-term objective of becoming a self-sustaining clinic.
Currently, Health Partners Inc. continues its mission to serve a diverse patient base. They welcome individuals with no insurance, as well as those with Medicare, Medicaid, and select commercial insurance plans. For uninsured patients, Health Partners Inc. is committed to affordability, offering a sliding fee scale based on household income. This scale, aligned with the current year’s Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and adjusted up to 200% above it, ensures that patients at lower income levels receive discounted fees for vital medical and dental visits. Health Partners Inc. remains dedicated to ensuring everyone in the community has access to quality healthcare.
