Qualifications to Thrive

To excel in this Medical Laboratory Technician Float role, you will need to meet the following essential qualifications:

  • Educational Foundation: An Associate’s degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution is required. Alternatively, graduation from a 12-month approved school for Certified Laboratory Assistants, with eligibility for certification, will also be considered. Candidates with documented experience performing high complexity testing prior to September 1, 1992, are also qualified.
  • Professional Certification: Certification by an agency approved by the ASCP Board of Certification or AMT is mandatory. If you are not currently certified, you must register for certification within 45 days of hire and successfully obtain certification within 6 months of your employment start date.
  • CLIA Compliance: You must be qualified to work in a highly complex laboratory as mandated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA).
  • Teamwork and Customer Focus: A demonstrated ability to promote teamwork through a courteous and cooperative attitude towards all customers is essential.

Preferred Skills:

While not mandatory, the following skills are highly desirable:

  • Six months of related medical training or practical experience.
  • Proficiency in typing and keyboard skills.

Accountabilities: Your Daily Impact

As a Medical Laboratory Technician Float, your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of critical tasks, all contributing to the smooth operation of our laboratories and the delivery of exceptional patient care:

  • Specimen Collection and Processing: You will expertly collect and process biological specimens using appropriate techniques and strictly following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Testing and Analysis Expertise: Perform a variety of testing analyses, verifying assay/analyzer performance according to SOPs, with a focus on efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Your work may span across areas such as Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, Serology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Urinalysis, Phlebotomy, Computer Operation, EKG, and Reception/Greet Station.
  • Accurate Result Documentation and Communication: Thoroughly and accurately document and communicate lab test results, strictly adhering to SOPs to ensure data integrity and clarity for healthcare providers.
  • Maintenance and Supply Management: Perform and diligently document required maintenance procedures and ensure adequate supply levels are maintained for seamless laboratory operations.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Competency: Demonstrate competency in all procedures and strictly comply with all policies set forth by regulatory agencies, ensuring the laboratory operates within legal and ethical standards.
  • Customer Service and Patient Experience Champion: Consistently implement and adhere to laboratory customer service and patient experience standards. This includes upholding patient confidentiality, promoting a strong teamwork environment, ensuring successful communication, and effectively resolving conflicts.
  • Proactive Responsiveness: React proactively and effectively to stressful situations, customer needs, and any departmental or clinic changes, maintaining composure and professionalism under pressure.
  • Professional and Personal Growth: Actively demonstrate professional development through participation in continuing education, involvement in special projects, and engagement with community, corporate, or professional organizations.
