Aeromexico Partners with Alaska Airlines: Elevating Your Travel Experience

In a move set to enhance travel options for passengers, Aeromexico, Mexico’s flagship carrier, announced a significant partnership with Alaska Airlines in December 2012. This collaboration introduced a new era of connectivity, linking the extensive networks of both airlines and offering travelers more seamless journeys between Mexico, the U.S. West Coast, and beyond. This agreement focuses on improving the frequent flyer experience and streamlining travel through a codeshare arrangement.

The partnership allows members of both Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and Aeromexico Club Premier to accrue miles across both networks. Starting in early 2013, frequent flyers could earn miles when flying with Alaska Airlines throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as well as on Aeromexico’s vast network of over 80 destinations spanning Mexico, the United States, Canada, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia. Crucially, miles earned on Aeromexico flights contribute towards elite status qualification in Alaska’s Mileage Plan MVP program, rewarding loyal customers with enhanced benefits. Redemption of miles for award travel on Aeromexico became available later in 2013, further enriching the value proposition for frequent flyers.

Joe Sprague, Vice President of Marketing at Alaska Airlines, highlighted the benefits for Aeromexico customers, stating, “Aeromexico’s customers will enjoy Alaska’s easy connections, streamlined handling of checked baggage and more travel options to some of the West Coast’s most popular destinations, including Seattle and Portland, Oregon.” He warmly welcomed Aeromexico passengers to experience Alaska Airlines’ acclaimed customer service on their flights to the U.S.

The codeshare agreement is a cornerstone of this partnership, with Aeromexico’s “AM” code being placed on Alaska Airlines flights across 20 city pairs. This includes all eight Mexican destinations served by Alaska Airlines from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and San Jose. This arrangement simplifies travel logistics significantly, allowing passengers connecting between Alaska Airlines and Aeromexico to check in with their originating carrier, receive boarding passes for their entire journey, and check baggage through to their final destination. This seamless transfer process is a major advantage for international travelers.

Sergio Allard, Aeromexico’s Chief Commercial Officer, expressed his enthusiasm about the alliance, stating, “We are very pleased to announce this new alliance and confident that this commitment will benefit all Alaska’s and Aeromexico’s passengers, which will allow them to connect with 45 cities around Mexico and with 11 different countries in Central and South America.” He also emphasized the reciprocal benefits for frequent flyer members, noting that “Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and Aeromexico Club Premier members will very soon also be able to enjoy all of their well-known benefits as if they were flying with the same airline.”

Alaska Airlines’ Mileage Plan stands out as a comprehensive frequent flyer program, allowing members to earn or redeem miles on 15 airlines, encompassing more major U.S. carriers than many other programs. Beyond flights, Mileage Plan offers diverse avenues to accumulate miles through its extensive network of partners. These include the Alaska Airlines Visa credit and debit cards, the Mileage Plan Dining program, and collaborations with 35 hotel and car rental partners worldwide, providing numerous opportunities for members to maximize their rewards.
