History of Health Partners in Waldorf, MD
Health Partners has a rich history of serving the Waldorf, MD area. Founded in 1992 by Sisters Michaeleen and Gladys Marie of the Sisters of Holy Cross, the organization was established to address a critical need: healthcare for Charles County citizens who lacked insurance and couldn’t afford medical services.
Initially, Health Partners relied on the generosity of local doctors who volunteered their time to see patients pro bono in their private practices. As the need grew, so did Health Partners’ vision. In 1996, a significant step forward was taken when the County Commissioners granted permission for Health Partners to renovate space at the Old Waldorf School. This marked the beginning of our medical clinic, operating as an independent non-profit with the guidance of a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors.
Expanding our services to meet the community’s needs, in 2007, we proudly opened our dental clinic. This expansion was made possible through the generous funding from The Greater Waldorf Jaycees, highlighting the community’s support for our mission. Today, Health Partners operates a comprehensive Primary Care Medical Clinic, staffed by a full-time Nurse Practitioner, and a Dental Clinic, supported by three Dentists and a Dental Hygienist, all within Waldorf, MD.
The introduction of the Affordable Care Act brought significant changes to the healthcare landscape, allowing Health Partners to further expand our programs. We adapted to meet the growing needs of an expanded Medicaid population, ensuring access to care for more individuals. A pivotal moment arrived on January 31, 2014, when Health Partners received a $300,000 grant from the Maryland Community Health Resource Commission. This grant, aimed at “Expansion of services and transition to include a Fee for Services” for Medicaid-qualified clients, was instrumental in our journey towards becoming a self-sustaining clinic and strengthening our services in Waldorf.
Today, Health Partners continues to be a vital healthcare resource in Waldorf, MD, welcoming individuals with no insurance, as well as those with Medicare, Medicaid, and select commercial insurance plans. For uninsured patients, we are committed to affordable care, offering a sliding fee scale based on household income, aligned with the Federal Poverty Level. This ensures that quality medical and dental care is accessible to everyone in our community, regardless of their financial situation.
