In a significant move within the dental industry, Heartland Dental, the leading dental support organization (DSO) in the United States, has announced a strategic transaction with American Dental Partners Incorporated (ADPI). This partnership, revealed on May 14, 2021, will combine two major forces in the DSO sector, enhancing support for dentists and expanding access to top-tier oral healthcare across the nation.
Based in Wakefield, Massachusetts, American Dental Partners brings to the table a robust network of 23 dental group practices encompassing 278 locations spread across 21 states. This strategic alignment significantly broadens Heartland Dental’s community of doctor leaders, creating more opportunities for dentists to receive comprehensive support while delivering exceptional patient care. The combined entity will boast a network of over 2,300 supported dentists in more than 1,400 locations across 38 states, solidifying their nationwide presence.
Patrick Bauer, President and CEO of Heartland Dental, emphasized the significance of this union: “We are thrilled to unite two historic industry leaders to advance doctor-led, high-quality oral health care. Heartland and American Dental Partners share a fundamental mission: to empower dentists and their teams to provide outstanding patient care and experiences. Together, our expanded geographic reach and combined operational resources will offer unparalleled value and support to doctors.”
This transaction unites two DSOs with highly compatible missions and organizational cultures. American Dental Partners is recognized for its extensive platform of high-caliber practices, many of which hold accreditation from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), underscoring their commitment to quality and patient safety. Heartland Dental is celebrated for its comprehensive support system for dental practices. This includes access to advanced continuing education (CE) and leadership training programs, cutting-edge equipment, streamlined procurement processes, and advanced technology solutions.
A key benefit of this partnership is the immediate access American Dental Partners’ doctors and team members will gain to Heartland Dental’s extensive educational resources. These offerings, including CE and leadership development, are designed to elevate the skills and career trajectories of supported dental professionals.
Kevin Trexler, CEO of ADPI, expressed enthusiasm about the merger, stating, “Joining Heartland Dental’s network provides our supported doctors and team members with vast resources, strengthening their practices and ultimately enhancing patient care. Our shared dedication to supporting doctors and team members forms a strong foundation for our combined efforts as a leading DSO.”
The transaction is anticipated to finalize in the second quarter of 2021, pending standard closing conditions. Heartland Dental’s legal counsel in this transaction is Ropes & Gray LLP, while American Dental Partners is receiving advisory services from Harris Williams.
